Since June 2021, our league has been hosting a monthly DEI Roundtable to bring local leagues together for candid conversations about how to expand voter education to diverse communities and to grow membership that is welcoming and supportive. We established a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board Director and Committee in 2021, as well as adding a line item to our budget supported DEI-related activities.
While following the League of Women Voters national and state guidelines and policies, we know the biggest obstacle to doing this important work is connecting those policies to action. The League of Women Voters has begun reckoning with its institutional history and “we are not only striving for better, we will do better.”
Doing better starts with conversation, getting to know our communities, identifying obstacles to voter information and voting access, as well as looking at everything we do as an organization through a DEI lens.
